Important changes to BMA Mine Spec requirements

BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) are implementing stricter safety standards as part of the BHP Fatality Elimination Program.

The program will be completed by the 1st of July 2025, with all light vehicles needing to be compliant from this date as BMA endeavours to reduce near-miss events and potential loss of life by 90% over five years. In addition to the new safety initiative, certain BMA sites continue to upgrade requirements relating to light vehicle features and digital radio communication.

What are the BMA Mine Spec changes?

In-Vehicle Monitoring Systems (IVMS)

An important component of this program is the introduction of In-Vehicle Monitoring Systems (IVMS) into all light vehicles working on BMA sites. This includes contractor vehicles and any hire vehicles that drive on site. The IVMS unit must be securely and permanently installed in the vehicle. Records relating to the installation and certification of the unit must be maintained by the IVMS provider and made available to BMA upon request for auditing purposes.

Handbrake Alarm

A handbrake alarm standard has been introduced which requires a device to be installed in the vehicle that alerts the driver with visual and audible cues when the handbrake has not been applied properly.

VHF Radios

Some BMA sites are no longer offering on-site digital radio programing. Any new radios will need to be programmed before reaching the site. BMA have announced that only specific radio models are compliant and must have specific features installed on the radio system.
