Got a plan for 4WD Camping at Sundown National Park? Less than four hours drive from Brisbane is one of South East Queensland’s best-kept secrets. Sundown National Park is a rugged and remote wilderness, with spectacular gorges and the picturesque Severn River. If you want a taste of the outback, within easy reach of Brisbane, then this is the spot for you. Sundown National Park, located on the border of Queensland and New South Wales, is approximately 30 minutes south-west of Girraween National Park. With plenty of tracks, steep climbs and descents, it’s a 4WD and nature lover’s paradise. Be prepared for some fun 4WDing! Rats Castle loop is rough and rocky and takes rugged adventure to another level. Discover the dramatic landscape of peaks rising over 1000 metres, jagged ridges, the unforgettable Red Rock Gorge and secluded waterholes. There’s nothing like hiking, setting up your tent along the banks of a river and enjoying the beauty and serenity. Chill out by the banks of the Severn River or get adventurous and explore the remote hiking tracks. You can read our tips on 4WD Camping at Sundown National Park.
The western side of the park is accessible with a conventional vehicle. From there, you can explore Sundown by foot. Stay at Broadwater and Nundubbermere Falls camping spots. The camping sites have few facilities, so come prepared.
To have a true wilderness adventure, you’ll need a 4WD. Sundown National Park is almost 11,000 hectares and there’s plenty of 4WD tracks and places to explore. From Ballandean, head west along Sundown Road to the eastern entrance of the park. With a 4WD, you’ll get to see Red Rock Gorge. This expansive gorge is a brilliant red rock formation and is a bit of ‘outback’ (and so close to Brissie!). The Red Rock Gorge camping ground is only 200m from the perfect vantage spot.
Want even more adventure? Deep within the park is Reedy Waterhole and Burrows Waterhole bush camping areas. These areas are for 4WD enthusiasts who are experienced with difficult tracks. Hell Hole and Rats Castle loop are not for the faint-hearted.
Things to pack:
Please note: Red Rock Gorge and Burrows Waterhole camping grounds have pit toilets, while Reedy Waterhole is bush camping.
